What’s in your hands?
I’ll admit this first: I don’t think I’m very good at hearing from God. But here we go.
When Pr Andy approached me about doing a Revo challenge, I thought I’d do what I always did, bless someone near me whom I could with a “useful” blessing (food, money, etc). God thought otherwise. He just wanted what’s in my hands.
“Who should I bless?” I asked God on a Thursday night. I vaguely sensed in my mind an image of a guy in an army green bomber jacket and a maroon shirt. I couldn’t figure out who it was, so I went to sleep.
“Who is it?” I asked God again, the next morning. I couldn’t think of anyone, so I started looking through my contacts — I didn’t know that many guys who would sport a bomber jacket, after all. I spotted a name. I think I’ve seen this guy wear a bomber jacket before. So I went to check his Instagram, and I found a photo that matched the description I had in my mind. But it wasn’t him. It was his brother, Caleb.
I knew Caleb enough only to know that he was still in Germany. How am I supposed to bless someone all the way in Germany?! So I did the thing I knew best. I drew. But I still didn’t know what his need was, so I asked God to show me.
“I’m going to put my playlist on shuffle, please tell me with a recurring theme in the next 3 songs what I should make for him.”
The songs that came up?
The Blessing by Elevation Worship
Jesus, Lover of My Soul by Awakening Music
Highlands (Song of Ascent) by Hillsong United
All the songs had a theme of declaration and praise even at a low point. So, I was inspired to draw a person who’s walking into a forest but at the deepest end, there’s actually light pouring out. I also prayed about the colour palette for the piece until it felt right.
After I did the illustration, I randomly Googled for a Bible verse to complete the piece. This was the first verse that came up:
Genesis 13:17 Arise, walk through the length and the breadth of the land, for I will give it to you.
I wasn’t 100% sure if this was the verse He wanted me to write. so I asked again. “If this is the verse, give me a song that’s related to walking.” I put my playlist on shuffle and went again. The song that came up was “Hit The Road Jack”. I laughed at God’s sense of humour, completed the piece and sent it Caleb on Facebook.
A day later, Caleb replied me. He told me that he had been needing this encouragement as he was feeling lost and purposeless after being in Germany for a year, and he also quickly realised that something incredible had JUST happened when he received my text and the artwork.
What I didn’t know was this: Caleb was in the process of moving into a new place, but as Germany was going into another lockdown and he had 3 months left at his current place’s contract, he was looking for a replacement tenant to take over for those 3 final months of his contract. However, he’s been looking for 2 weeks and there hasn’t been anyone. The landlord told him that even if he couldn’t find someone, he would need to pay the remaining months’ worth of rent.
This meant that he would then have to bear the rent for 2 different places in these 3 months — the place he was moving out of, as well as the new space — it wasn’t something he could afford.
Yet, as soon as he had received my text, he had managed to find someone, confirm his 3 months stay, and get approval from the landlord — it all happened in a couple of hours after I texted him!
He had been worrying about this for 2 weeks, but God solved it in just 2 hours.
What part did I have to play? I’m still not very sure. I just did what I knew best. And God used that to move something much, much, much bigger than any of us.
All it takes is to pray, listen, and obey. God will take care of the rest.
